While most of you are bundled up next to a fire with hot chocolate or tea, I am wearing short sleeves and welcoming spring already. The peas are already sending out blossoms. And our peach tree unfortunately has already begun to bloom. Today is colder then it has been for the last three weeks, at 60 degrees. Two weeks ago we were hanging out in shorts and a t-shirt at 78 degrees. I'm not ready for spring or summer yet!
Though I am making way. I built a tepee from bamboo rods for the summer peas. I've also got lots of seedlings coming up.
In these little paper pots (I used this tutorial) I've planted San Marzano tomatoes, pumpkin, cucumbers, thyme, genovese basil, rosa bianca eggplants, brazilian peppers given to me by a seed-saving friend, long Italian sweet peppers and sage. All have sprouted and are coming up nicely under the grow light I bought. I decided to do things right this year and I am happy for it. In all the previous years of gardening I have started from seed halfheartedly. I just planted the seeds, didn't water them often and hoped there was enough light. The ones that did sprout became spindly and weak. It made me sad to see life try so hard to prosper and I not giving it a helping hand, so I made a change and I am very happy about it. I see visions of future food coming into our kitchen and I am overwhelmed with delicious treats to eat.
Out in the garden now is rainbow chard, spinach, dragon carrots, beets, and peas.
If you want a good place to by seeds I get them through Bountiful Gardens and Seed Savers Exchange.
And lastly this fun baking flop my husband called "muttcakes". I tried making these coconut cupcakes using only coconut flour. The are the ugliest cupcakes on the Internet, but they are really yummy!
Oh, your pictures are just lovely. I can't wait for spring and time outside in the sun (without the snow). Getting my hands dirty, hanging laundry, planting....just a few more months.
ReplyDeleteFor now, I will keep looking at your pics :)
PEAS!!! PEAS!!! how beautiful!! I'm stealing your idea for the newspaper seedling pots!!! Perfect timing!!!
ReplyDeleteWe ate the peas that were ready today. They were delicious! Yeah paper pots, it's because I'm cheap (let's say frugal)! No, but seriously, it's a great way to use up those pesky newspaper adds you get in the mail.
DeleteIt's warm enough this year that I probably need to think about some garden planning soon--I'm ready for fresh peas again.
ReplyDeleteIt's been so warm here our peach tree blossomed! Hopefully no frost is in it's future.
DeletePeas! Peas? Goodness! As I watch the snow falling yet again outside, I hold on to the taste of fresh picked peas. Enjoy!
