Things are getting a bit fermented around here! On the left my 6 month old sourdough starter. Makes. AMAZING. bread. On the right, my first ever go at sauerkraut. I used the recipe for one quart of sauerkraut from Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. At the market right now there are a lot of lovely dark greens and cabbage is in abundance. I'll let you know in a week how the sauerkraut is.
Tomorrow I am having an wonderful GIVEAWAY from a wonderful woman and mama. Make sure not to miss it!
I have made that sauerkraut before, delish!!! Oh, I can't wait for an abundance of leafy greens at the market, a little jealous up here :)
ReplyDeleteI do hope it will be. I've never had sauerkraut before!
DeleteAwesome!
ReplyDeleteMy mama lives next door at the moment ( she doesn't stay in one place very long) She is sort of a hippie..haha! She has shelf after shelf of stuff that she is fermenting. Her house looks like something from Merlina and Igor:))) They look weird but taste yummy and are so good for you.
Hope you're having a great week!
That sounds like a great blog post! I'd like to see those shelves. IF the kraut turns out well I"m going to try out kimchi next! My week is going well so far, thanks!
DeleteI am keeping my fingers crossed that my sourdough starter (from Cultures for Health--the ones I attempted from scratch never worked!) will be a success and I will be able to make my first loaf soon. Do you post some of your recipes using sourdough starter? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI didn't have success with my first starter either because there is bacteria problem with the modern flour we have now. So if you want to start from scratch you need to use a bit of pineapple juice to start unless you grind your own flour. Once you've got the starter going you need to let it mature for a while by refreshing the starter ie dumping some starter and adding new flour and water. My starter worked pretty well after 3 weeks. But after 9 months it's going really strong! It makes amazing bread. Check out the blog Wild Yeast, she's my favorite sourdough bread recipe source.
DeleteThank you! I'll check out Wild Yeast and hope to be baking soon. I used a spelt starter and locally sourced spelt flour.
