While on vacation this past week we spent two days at the San Diego Zoo. What a blast, but more on that later. On the last day on our way out, we stopped in the gift shop to pick up a postcard or two and allow Sofia to pick out one souvenir. Of all the awesome books, stuffed animals and other such animal related things that she could have picked she picked this:
When Daniele (who was holding her at the time) walked up to me and said, "Babe, Sofia choose what she wanted." I turned around to see her holding this pink purse with stuffed panda bears and hearts. I thought to myself, "Are you kidding me, how could my kid pick this out. We have nothing like this in our house." Daniele then told me how she didn't look at anything else until she spotted the purse and got very excited and clutched it with an iron grip.
I realized at that moment that this was an opportunity for me to learn to accept and respect her individual choices no matter how much I don't like them. So after a few huffs and puffs I let it go and we got the bag. She still loves it of course, probably because she doesn't have anything like it in the house.
I like this post! (Don't think I've commented before.) That's quite abominable, isn't it, but sometimes you have to try to see things through their eyes. If a child sees something as precious, then that can sometimes make the object a little bit magic, I think. I know I had some unexplainable attachments to things of very questionable taste as a young thing. Of course I always wanted the giant (trashy) teddy prize at the sideshows! It's kind of touching how untainted little kids can be by notions of fashion/taste/quality.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good lesson and I think applies just as well to husband and wife:)
ReplyDeleteJane- Thank you for commenting! I am really interested in knowing who is reading.
ReplyDeleteSara- It definitely applies to spouses as well. Daniele recently bought Nerf guns and I totally object, but he really really wanted them with a ten year olds' enthusiasm and since he has no hobbies other then video games, I didn't say anything.
