Our CSA adventures begin

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I signed up for summer CSA(community supported agriculture) session with great local farm, Sleeping Frog. Today was the first pick up in our 12 week session. I've been eagerly anticipating this day because of the unknown factor of what veggies are ready this week?
So at 8 am we braved the 106 degree heat to pick up our veggies. In the above picture (taken with Daniele's cell phone) you see me holding a bag of summer squash and Sofia two heads of garlic.

Here's what we picked up:
  • 1 bunch of carrots
  • 1 bag of purple potatoes
  • 2 red onions
  • 1 bag mixed summer squash
  • 2 heads of garlic
  • 1 bunch of dragon kale
  • 1 bunch of rainbow chard
  • 1 bag golden purslane
I'm so excited to eat lots of veggies. I've been craving more veggies but just didn't know what to choose. Now some one has chosen for me and I am ready to dug up some tasty looking recipes and get cooking or not... raw veggies salads sound really good in this hot weather.

Tonight's dinner was grilled salmon, pan fried garlic potatoes and purslane salad.
Here's a close up of the salad. The recipe I found called for yogurt, olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. Mix those in bowl and toss with the purslane. It was delicious. I had never heard of purslane before today, so I was really excited to try it. The purple potatoes were tasty too, the purple did not alter the flavor at all.

I think I'll do a weekly CSA photo post so you can get an idea of what it's like to be part of a CSA. Have a fun Independence Day everyone!

  1. wow! that produce looks delicious! Dave and I get a bag of produce and local cheese every week from a small grocery called Liberty Heights Fresh. It's not a CSA, but we like that we're supporting a local store who supports local products.

  2. It's all about buying local, so the fact that the store gets local produce is really great. What a treat the cheese must be. What kind did you get this week?
