Have you ever wondered what hundreds of small dairy cows would look like in jar? Well here it is, a jar full of cow peas. This is my full harvest of native cow peas from the summer. This this cup and a half of dried beans makes me realize how much more I would need to plant inorder to have a store of them in pantry for over the winter.
I did also pick them young as green beans and put away two gallon freezer bags full of beans. I can't wait to make a soup out of these.
Next year I'll try to plant a few rows instead of just 5 or six beans . After three years of gardening I've come to realize just how much work goes into to producing food. My goal of feeding my family from our backyard seems so far away. But I know with time and patience it will happen. I also live in the desert, one of the hardest places to farm with no water, hell fire temperatures and terrible soil.
I'll keep you posted on the soup. I wonder if the peas will hold their color or go all black?

ReplyDeleteGood job! I hear you on the gardening thing...I am so humbled here in the desert. When we lived in Oregon everything I planted thrived and I fed my family salad every night from our garden all summer with very little effort. Here, I'm lucky if I get a handful of tomatoes and a few peppers, one or two dinners worth of broccoli, a few eggplants...certainly not enough to can or store for the future!
