This tutorial is way last minute but very in time for next year! After last years ornament disaster (all our bulbs were broken by a curious toddler) I decided that we would have kids safe ornaments this year. So I made felt ornaments and felt garland. Making these blub ornaments is super easy and takes about ten minutes each. That is if you don't have little ones asking you to read their favorite book again for the hundredth time. In any case let's get started so you can put these on your tree! Start by collecting your materials.
Materials: two colors of felt, about 20 inches of embroidery thread an embroidery needle, fiber fill.
Start by cutting out two large circles and one small one. Then take one large circle and place a smaller circle on top of it. I put mine at the edge but you can put it anywhere you like. Then I bring the thread up through the bottom and down again making a line. This will be the beginning of the snow flake or star burst.
This is what it looks like from the back.
Continue on until you have completed the star.
Then using a running stitch, finish the applique.
Next place the other large circle on the back and pull the thread down through it.
Using a blanket stitch stitch the two circles together.
When you start to come round to the beginning again stop and place some fiber fill inside.
Then continue to stitch all the way around. When you get all the way to where you started, hold a length of thread about 5 inches long this will be your way to hang the ornament. Holding the length of thread choose a space on the other side of the ornament that will allow it to hang evenly. Then make a few stitches in the same place to secure the loop and tie a knot. Then cut off the excess and you are done!
Here's what it looks like on the tree.
Here's another version using a bit of scrap fabric. Just cut two circles of felt, then cut a hole in one of the circles and using a running stitch attach the scrap piece of fabric. Then close up the two circles using the blanket stitch. Happy Holidays everyone! Thank you so much for reading!
These are beautiful! I am looking forward to next Christmas already :) Love them. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable! I've been wanting to make some felt ornaments for our tree, but all the ones I managed to make I gave to friends and family, so the only felt one left, is a mitten my son (6) sewed. It makes me smile everytime I look at it :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I can't believe I managed to get these done this year. But it was really easy, I was actually able to do it while my two girls played on the floor in front of me.
