Meditation and dish washing

What you see above is a dish washer full of clean dishes. However, these dishes were not cleaned by this monster of a dish washer. They were all washed by me! This is an event of monumental proportions.

Do you remember back when I said one of my new goals was to making dish washing a habit. Well it's finally happened. This dishwasher is, shall I say, downright awful at washing dishes. Every load comes out dirty. I've tried all the cleaning methods short of calling out a repairman. So I decided one day last week that it was high time to start hand washing these things.

So I bought some new gloves, an eco-friendly European style sponge and the Original Spaghetti Scrubber and went to work. The key I found is that by not hiding away the dishes in the dish washer to be washed later, I am forced to look at and smell them. This in itself is motivation enough for washing dishes.

After 20 years of detesting doing dishes and claiming that, "I will never live without a dish washer" I'm giving it up. No more dishwasher. No more dishwasher = no more dirty dishes. It also means less dishes to do as I do them as they become dirty. So now I only have whatever was used at that meal instead of three days worth of dishes.

I've found doing the dishes wonderfully relaxing as I have my hands in warm water, I put a little music on to wash to, and I get to clear out my head. Working out any problems or thinking up new awesome things to do as I make things clean.

Is there a house hold chore you love to do now that you previously hated?

  1. although we now have a dishwasher, for years we didn't. i always liked doing them by hand. the sink full of hot soapy water, the squeek of a clean dish. with how busy my life is with a house full of kids and all the comings and goings and how the house can be torn up in just a wee little bit of time it always felt like i had finished something. i liked vacuuming for that same reason. the lines in the carpet... felt like something was done. lol

  2. Yay for washing dishes!! We don't own a dishwasher, never have. I too find it relaxing, most of the time. I always have my little notebook near by, because when the mind is free to think the best things pop up :)

I have never liked cleaning the bathroom, still don't, so instead I leave it to my husband :)
