An art smock and exploring the creative process

A few weeks ago I made Sofia an art smock so she could get down and dirty when finger painting without having to take all her clothes off.

This was the painting session with watercolors before the art smock.
She was happy to model it for me as it has pockets. She loves pockets on clothing. Who doesn't really?

Here Sofia is doing her best modeling pose.

I love to create things. In high school and college that energy was tunneled into theater, photography and many different exploratory art classes. I even got an art degree.

For the past two years I've had to put the paints and clay and other chemical art supplies aside due being pregnant or having an itty bitty around.

But now that Sofia is getting old enough to start exploring art materials my creative wheels are starting to turn again. Right now it's all about the process and not the outcome, which is a very different way to create. I almost wish I had that mind set in college. It would have made all those critiques a lot easier.

We color or paint everyday. Mostly coloring with beeswax crayons (beware they smell amazing and toddlers want to eat them), and I'm trying out different brands of eco-friendly paints. When I find one I really love I'll do a post about them along with the other art supplies we like so that you can try them out too.

I've considered making my own flour and starch based paints, but I like the idea of having just a little paint mixed up at a time so that after 10 minutes when Sofia is ready to move on I don't have to store anything in the fridge. That might be something to try later when she is old enough to help choose colors and stir.

Have you been creating anything lately?
