Easy to make hot/cold rice packs

Two pieces of scrap fabric, 5 pounds of cheap bulk rice, one tired mama back. Over the weekend I made these two rice hot packs. They are very simple to make as you can make then any size you want. I just took to piece of scrap fabric I had, folded them in half, sewed up the sides and left just a small opening to siphon the rice into the bag. Then I used and invisible stitch close it with. I also added lavender buds in with the rice so that it would have a nice smell. To heat them just put them in the microwave for several minutes and too freeze, well pop them in the freezer for an hour or so.
The big one fits nicely on my lower back or stomach and the smaller pink one with elephants is for Sofia. I'd like to make another one for Daniele with more masculine fabric.

I found more complicated versions online which are similar to pillows in that you have a rice bag and a nice looking cover so you can wash the cover. I preferred to take the lazy way out.

  1. My mom and I have been making these for years...they are the best! She likes to make them long and skinny so that they wrap along your neck and shoulders, while I like the size closer to yours. In the winter when it's "cold" here, my boys take them to bed with them every night. We've found that whole corn (not popping corn, but the kind you buy at a feed store) also works very well and retains the heat quite a bit longer than the rice does.
