I rarely, if ever, write about social causes here on the blog. I don't find myself with enough time to get the laundry done let alone avocate for social causes. Yet I do have the time to make a good choice about where I spend my money. That's why I wanted to tell you about my new pair of pajama pants from Punjammies.
I found this organization called the International Princess Project via a pin I found on Pinterest. If you've been to my house you'll know I'm in love with Indian culture as I have stuff from India all over my house. When I came upon these pajama pants I was searching for indian wood blocks for printing on fabric. These particular pair of pants are done in the traditional style called kalamkari. When we went to Rajasthan in western India, I bought 5 different tapestries done in this style. I wish I had bought 50 as they are so lovely.
When I went to India I was lucky enough to go there for a wedding. I met many wonderful people and saw incredible beauty. However I also saw extreme poverty. Poverty that really rocked me to the core. Seeing men and women sleeping in medians of the road, children using the gutters as bathrooms was something that my American brain had a hard time accepting as real. After coming back from India I also saw the film Born into Brothels, which documents the lives of children who lived in the brothels of Calcutta.

After reading their mission and seeing all the beautiful pants they made I couldn't help but by a pair. Thirty-five dollars might seem like a lot for a pair of pj's but that 35 dollars goes an incredibly long way in rupees. A quick Google search revealed that the average wage in India is $500 a year! I spend that on groceries in a month! So $35 is well worth the the price to help another woman and possibly a mother get back on her feet and into a better life!
Now to the practical part, are these pants comfy? Totally! They are machine washable and come with a matching bag you can repurpose for something awesome like a bread bag! The shipping time was super fast too! Overall awesome feel good purchase!
Note: I'm not affliated with Punjammies just wanted to tell you all about a worthy cause I found out about!
I've had these on my "wish list" for a while. :) Glad to hear you like them and that they're comfortable. Definitely a good cause to support.
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely get them! They are so comfy.
DeleteYour post gave me the needed push to buy a pair yesterday. Can't wait to get them! I'm hoping they will be a good summer pair of pants for the Tucson heat.
DeleteThey will be! Once you give them a wash they will feel so soft! I wore them all a day yesterday.
DeleteLove these! I haven't been to India but after spending an extended amount of time in Thailand, I felt similarly effected by the poverty. And that movie, was touching in many ways. Wow. Sounds like you found a great organization to support while getting some good threads to lounge around the house in - always a good combo!
ReplyDeleteOh Thailand! I have a friend living in there now who is a photographer and is working on documenting local tribes. I'd love to go there one day.
Deletei'm such a sucker for indian block print- to me there are few textiles more gorgeous. thanks for sharing a fabulous pair of pants that supports a fabulous cause!
ReplyDeleteBlock printing is so incredible to me. I'm going to try to buy some printing blocks soon when I take a trip home to NM. There is a flea market there that sells them.
DeleteLove them!! They look great, and support a fabulous cause too! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI suppose I need to post a picture of myself wearing them!
