Salba Chia review and GIVEAWAY

I was approached a while back by the lovely people at Salba Smart asking if I wanted to try out their product. Since trying out new things is fun (especially new things that are really good for you) I decided to give it a go.


They sent me a lovely box filled with ground Salba and whole seed. I find myself using them on a daily basis in muffins, smoothies, scrambled eggs, and over avocado chunks (thanks Kim). So what's so awesome and different about Salba? Chia is a super food like blueberries or salmon or flax seeds. Salba chia happens to be only two varieties out more then 80 different strains. There is so much goodness packed into these tiny seeds it's really hard to imagine that it is higher in O-mega 3 fatty acids then salmon, more calcium then whole milk and more fiber then flax seeds just to name a few. Salba is grown in Peru. The company is partners with the growers so there is a lot of direct communication. Both the organic and non organic versions are NON-GMO certified. I like that because GMO seeds are just a world of trouble! But that's for another blog post.

I really like that they sent this comparison packet of salba vs. chia. If you take a close look you can really see the difference in seed size of the generic chia.

Salba would be great in date nut balls or sprinkled over a baked potato. The fact that Salba is white compared to black is also great because I can easily hide them in any food.  I found the ground Salba to be the most useful as I could put it into all my baked goods. If you have ever used chia before you know it gets a bit muscolagenous when wet, so make sure to add them very last thing if you put them on salads or eggs. 

If you have a toddler who won't eat fat, milk products, fish or take cod liver oil,  Salba is a great option for getting more Omega-3 and calcium into their in their diets. They have done a much more scientific job of reviewing this seed!

As a busy mama I give Salba two thumbs up and recommend it as an easy nutritional boost. It's easy to incorporate into your daily cooking and I like that.

  1. We love chia in our home, as you well know KC. Sprinkle it on something at least once a day, and it often gets added to morning smoothies. I have also used it as an egg replacer when baking.

  2. Smoothies! I think you could incorporate them into energy bites (homemade larabars) too. There is a recipe on my blog. I'd never heard of these but we would sure love to give them a try! I'll be trying to locate some now :)

  3. Ooh, I've been wanting to make homemade crackers for a while and haven't gotten around to it. These would be lovely baked into rice crackers. Off to look for a recipe now.

  5. I use them in smoothies although you have to be careful about not saving some smoothie for later or the chia seeds may start to get a little too gelatinous. I've also got a few recipes for vegan baked goods that use chia seeds as an egg replacer. And I've also got a great cracker recipes that uses chia seeds as a binder.

  6. It's an oldie but a goodie: chia pudding! I like to make either chocolate with cocoa powder or cinnamon-vanilla (sort of like rice pudding flavored).

  7. I've been sprinkling it over the boys' yogurt in the mornings and mixing it into homemade granola bars, love it!

  8. Chia rocks!!! I just put them on a spoon with a little raw honey and eat them..haha! I'm boring:)) oh, I do put them in smoothies for the kiddos. I should make energy bites with them, that would be fun!
