Thoughts on Mother's Day

I had a long discussion with my mom in the car the other day about Mother's Day and we came to the conclusion that this day is really for the daughters and sons and not so much for a mother herself. I am a mother of two, but I didn't make a lovely brunch for myself, it was done with my mother and grandmother in mind. And my mother thought the same thing, she wanted this day to be nice for my grandmother (her mother).

There is so much commercialism surrounding Mother's Day that it really irks me and makes me want to ignore the day all together. This Mother's Day was special in that it was fraught with tantrums and disappointment. There were tired babies, no naps, people not showing up for brunch and so on. It felt like the most motherly day of all as I spent most of it working on my mothering skills. Until my girls are old enough to understand the concept of Mother's Day, I will continue on with just seeing it as a day to honor my own mother and not a day for me.

Note: I made this most amazing chocolate torte from Nourish the Whole Self. That made the day special.

  1. I so wanted to feel this way yesterday - and it was a particularly trying day with my oldest - but something changed my mind. I wrote about it here:

  2. We're all recovering from the sniffles around here, and it was a pretty usual day with a two year old and a tired, pregnant Mama. Thankfully my mom is here and she is so great at lightening the load of parenting - entertaing Z and even helping her go to sleep the last two nights. I look forward to the days of homemade cards and burnt pancakes in bed!

    1. I'm really glad to have been here at my mom's house as well. My 5 am wake up call from S and V were lightened with her help. Ahh, burnt pancakes. I love what Heather from ROTH got, toast with coconut butter and pretzels!

  3. i agree! it's overly commercial. i don't want cards, presents, flowers, just a day of quiet. and there is usually a meal out or take out so i don't have to cook or do dishes :) the chocolate torte looks amazing!!!

    1. Thanks! I made it specifically for my 92 year old grandmother who eats only sweets. I wanted her to have a sweet treat that was really good for her! There is only once piece left! It will certainly become my go to chocolate dessert. Thanks for dropping by!

  4. Totally agree KC. My mother's day was fabulous and I cooked breakfast, enjoyed an anniversary lunch at my in-laws and then a quiet evening at home. What more do I need?? I know I am loved and appreciated I don't need a special card or day to tell me that :)

I was very lucky in that my in-laws invited my parents to our anniversary lunch so we were all together which was lovely.

Sounds like you are having a great time!!!
